Chelmsford travelled to meet Hornchurch in this quarter final which turned out to be a typical closely fought Cup tie. Injuries to Page and Winter saw Hardy pair up with Jacobs in attack. City started well and began to control possession and looked more lively in front of goal. Chances were soon created and both Jacobs and Hardy, playing a deeper role both went close. City central midfield playmakers Bartrip and Crocker had little time and space against the Hornchurch five man midfield and found themselves covering a lot of ground without seeing too much of the ball. Jacobs worked the channels well and began to stretch the Hornchurch defence and wide midfielders Onafeko and Kirby worked hard to deliver crosses for the front two. Hornchurch rarely threatened, and keeper Kendal and the City back four of Sheppard, Whalley, Ambrose and Wraight were in fine form. A flurry of City corners and free kicks in the closing stages of the first half saw Ambrose go close with a far post header but the score remained goalless at half time.
City continued to dominate the second half and Bowden who had not played in attack for a year replaced Hardy and began to cause problems for the home side. Crocker and Bartrip were replaced by Bradford and Smith and Cameron replaced Onafeko. The strength in squad began to play a key role in this match and Cameron and Bradford worked well to create a chance for Jacobs whose fierce drive was saved well by the Hornchurch keeper. Minutes later City had what looked like a good goal ruled out, but Bowden had apparently handled in the build up. A fitter looking City began to turn the S***W and excellent work by Jacobs and Kirby down the left saw the ball cut back across the box for an unmarked Bowden to slot home from close range. This was no more than City deserved and with eight minutes remaining Hornchurch began to press for an equaliser. The chance they were waiting for arrived with minutes remaining but their close range shot was fired over. With four minutes of stoppage time City still had the confidence to attack and Bowden And Ambrose both went close. City saw off a final flurry from Hornchurch, and the game ended in a deserved victory for the Clarets who now meet Grays Athletic in the semi final.
